Meet emily beale: Yoga Teacher at This Is Yoga

What was your inspiration for becoming a yoga teacher?

I remember the first time I went to a yoga class in a studio that really lit me up. I cried, I moved, I felt seen, held and totally freaked out… what was this magic?! I had never experienced that before. I became obsessed! I did my YTT, and became teacher as a result. It sounds completely cliché, but finding yoga changed my life. I had a very unhealthy relationship to exercise- using it as a weapon as opposed to a way of supporting my health. Yoga came along and was like, ‘Girl, this is no way to move your body! Sit down, I got you…’ I have not stopped loving my body since- and that has taken me YEARS to say!

Your favourite yoga pose if you have one?

Easy - head stand! I absolutely love being upside down, it literally solves all your life problems!

What do you enjoy most about teaching?

Sharing it. To watch someone come into a room, move their body, clear their minds, get touched by a dharma so much they have a good mat-sob- it is an absolute privilege to lead that. I will be your absolute cheerleader if it is your first time in a studio- being a part of someone elses journey to yoga-obsession is my absolute favourite. I am also obsessed with the power of the breath. Using the breath to shift our state is just one of our most powerful human tools and it shocks me everyday how amazing it is! I nearly always have pranayama in my classes as I don’t think we can learn enough about it.

About emily:

Emily has been a full time yoga Teacher in Sydney for the past four years. For 12 years she also owned a theatre-in-education company called Bamboo Theatre, and wrote, directed and produced welfare shows in high schools. She started to see the power of combining her welfare work, with her yoga teaching, and as a result, The Teen Yoga Project was born! For the past 18 months she has been creating an online platform to be used in high schools, to teach students and teachers how to regulate themselves using their body mind and breath- to say she is obsessed with getting yoga into every high school in Australia would be a mild understatement! Having seen the transformative affect yoga has on a room full of adults on the daily, she wants to share that with every teen in Australia (okay, the world, lets be honest!).

Obsessed with the art of moving meditation, Emily’s vinyasa sequences give centre stage to the breath, and her dharmas will make you think!
