Michael

Michael's interest in yoga went from zero to teacher training within the space of 18 months. So impacted was he by the changes he felt after 12 months of regular classes, that the ongoing journey into his practice took him to India for his teacher training in Ashtanga practice.

This Is Yoga is Michael's first exciting venture into sharing his passion and vision by creating a space for people who never thought yoga was for them. Michael will show you how to find your feet and learn how such an ancient practice can give you such a positive affect on your body and in your life.

When Michael is not teaching or practicing at the studio, you can find him surfing with his brothers, having BBQs with friends and family or out in the middle of the bush on one of his many adventures!

Michael's classes are both fun and lighthearted with inversions and challenges to take you through your practice.

He will ask you to find a place in yourself that feels like there is nowhere else to go and then make you dig that little bit deeper!  Compassionate when least expected and full of his own quirky takes on living a life on purpose, he is a refreshing yoga teacher and a class not to be missed!

Mel

Melanie

Melanie has been practicing everything yoga since her lengthy sojourn in India 14 years ago. While based at the Sivananda ashram in Kerala, Mel not only focused on the postures of yoga but meditation, breath work and every other positive experience yoga has to offer. This has now become her foundation to the way she practices and teaches today.

Upon her return to Australia, Melanie continued to deepen her personal practice by assisting and shadowing classes with Sydney-based teachers Nicole Goodwin and Duncan Peak. Inspired by the profound changes she realized from consistent practice, Melanie then trained with Baron Baptiste in the style of Power Yoga, Twee Merrigan in the style of Vinyasa Flow , Paul Grilley in the form of Yin Yoga - her current passion. This training gave her the platform she needed to find her own teaching style, which is a blend of modern Western/traditional Indian and Daoist approaches.

During this time Melanie also began four years of study with her metaphysics teacher, Paul Balch. She is now certified at the teacher trainer level and shares many aspects of her energetic work in her yoga classes. After working as a senior teacher at bodymindlife at Surry Hills and Rozelle for the last 10 years, Mel thought it was time for an exciting change. Now happily settled into the eastern beaches of Sydney, she is now proud to be the senior facilitator at This Is Yoga.

An honoured ambassador of lululemon Athletica, she is actively involved in all community events whenever she can, from teaching yoga events in store to beaches and parks across Sydney. Melanie has a background in dance which lends itself naturally to the flow and movement of asana. She is committed to yoga as a way to align us physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually, and as a tool to ground us against the stresses of everyday life. Her classes are peppered with the yogic and modern philosophy that truly changed her own life and she hopes to lead YOU on an exciting journey into your own innate goodness, balance and being-ness.

Lindsay

Lindsay

A native New Yorker, Lindsay moved to Bondi in 2010 after a few years of globetrotting and chasing summer. The ocean, mountains and open spaces have always called her name, and she feels most alive when she's outdoors under the sun with the earth under her feet.

Lindsay is an avid animal lover and advocate and has spent lots of time in animal shelters and sanctuaries all over the world. She finds that her yoga practice and study of yogic principals enhances her connection to others, something she has felt deeply from a young age. Not only has she found that yoga has softened some of her hard New York edges, asana has increased her physical, mental and emotional strength and balance and she enjoys a dynamic flowing practice.

Her classes offer students opportunity to grow in strength and mental stamina but also in awareness of body, mind and spirit.

Ellen

Ellen

Ellen

Ellen

When Ellen was first introduced to yoga, the love affair was apparent from the start. Recommended by a friend to just give yoga a "try", it was here that Ellen truly found complete joy and freedom within her body and her overthinking mind.

Coming from a musical background, Ellen has always used her body as a form of expression, so the marriage between performing on stage and her practice on the mat was very clearly meant to be.

Ellen's new found hobby, quickly and effortless began to take up most of her time, and her passion and determination grew into wanting to make this her new path in life.

Diving headfirst into her practice (maybe even a little obsessed) yoga transformed her life, both physically and mentally. Gaining strength, patience and an inner peace Ellen was not used to, life as she knew it was turned upside down. Inspired by the ever changing and always challenging practice of yoga, Ellen's classes will leave you feeling empowered, both physically and mentally. With your muscles being strengthen and lengthen and confronting the potential of your own mind. Ellen's purpose is to give back to her community and allow for her students to fall in love with the power of yoga the way she was able to.

Rosh

Roshi’s journey into yoga began over 10 years ago while living in Ireland. She devoted her practice to Bikram Yoga for four years and loved the physical challenge and discipline this style gave her, but she eventually started searching for more.

While practicing different styles of yoga she one day stepped into an Anusara class with Tahnee Fouriner. Roshi loved the way the class beautifully flowed and the heartfelt theme of the Anusara practice. Roshi knew then that she too wanted to follow this path deeper and share her love of the practice with as many people as possible.

Following her inner voice and trusting the pulsation from her heart, she set off to Bali to do a 200-hour Teacher Training with certified Anusara teacher, Bridget Woods Kramer. Roshi has now been teaching for over 5 years and embraces the practice of yoga into her everyday life. Roshi’s classes are inspired and infused by the seasons, nature and also by what is going on around her energetically.

Roshi teaches from her heart and brings a warm and generous presence to the room. She teaches a “conscious vinyasa” class that invites you to open your heart, stretch your mind, breathe and connect back to your sweetest selves.

Kas

Kassandra has been a professional dancer for most of her life, dancing for artists all around the world whilst practicing yoga along the way.

This was until her latest venture around the world where she studied with an incredible yogi, Kester Lunney, in a Shala on a remote island in Thailand. Here she realised this was her next great path in her life. The excitement of being able to change peoples lives as he did to hers sent her to an Ashram in Rishikesh, India at Shiva Yoga Peeth.

Kass completed her teacher training in Ashtanga and Hatha, meditation, Pranayama and this ancient practices of the Indian philosophy. Loving that yoga is practiced evenly on both sides of the body unlike most other exercise techniques and the importance of giving your mind and soul as much time and effort superficial body.

Kaylee

Kaylee

Ever since she was a child, Kaylee always had the urge to move her body. Years of playing team sports led her to be selected to run track for Vanguard University where she received a Bachelors in Psychology. Like many people who find yoga, she began incorporating a regular practice to complement her athletics training and started seeing the benefits on and off her mat.

She recalls, “I can pinpoint the very moment my love affair with the practice began –in a yoga studio in Phoenix, Arizona, lying in Savasana listening to Alexi Murdoch sing sweet somethings about orange skies and salvation”.

After becoming a Pilates mat and Barre instructor in 2010, five years of consistent yoga practice, one big move to Australia, two babies, and a new found passion she delved into the journey of a 200 hour vinyasa training with Power Living. Since then, she has completed a continued advanced vinyasa training under Duncan Peak and Yin training with Mel McLaughlin.

Kaylee believes, “Yoga is an artistic expression of who we really are. Through moving with our breath on our mats, we go on a journey within, we show up and we surrender to the flow and release to find real freedom for ourselves”.

Liz also loves to teach others to move more efficiently and implement these changes into their own life and brings a energetic style that will bring life (prana) to every cell in your body.

A Clovelly local, Deb has a passion for health, wellbeing and fitness combined and loves to be as close as possible to the ocean. Deb’s classes combine vinyasa flow and yin yoga - drawing on her experience of the physical effects of running, gym training and open water ocean swimming to both activate the body and relax the mind.

Deb’s journey on the mat accelerated when she suffered injuries that put an end to her life-long competitive running career, during preparations for her first marathon and for Surf Life Saving World Masters sand events. She fell in love with the peaceful ease she found in the movement, as well as the physical benefits and health.

Deb completed her 200 hour Teacher Training studying with John Ogilvie at Byron Yoga Centre and her 100 hour Yin Teacher Training under Melanie McLaughlin.

Keith is an example of someone living the life of a yogi. With a daily practice for the last five years he is evolving his practice every single day to constantly push his boundaries and evolve.

He believes yoga is a very powerful practice allowing us to let go of the burdens that do not serve us and take in new qualities by exercising spiritually to sharpen the body as well as train the mind. He will challenge you to go deeper all while personally tailoring to your own capabilities.

Keith has recently finished a PhD in quantum physics and traveling the world doing research and giving talks in the field. He is quite familiar with the struggles of everyday life in the modern world.  He is taking a break from the scientific life to dive deeper into his own yoga practice (as he is young, fit, healthy, passionate, and motivated), to teach yoga inspiring others and raising the net consciousness of the planet, and to pursue other dreams.

Laura

Laura

As a full of beans child Laura took classes in ballet, jazz and tap, before moving on to gymnastics and running  as a teenager. After suffering from a back injury in her early teens, Laura had to take time out of sport, and never really found a way back in that left her body feeling nourished and cared for.

She began her serious yoga practice in 2014 after completing a leadership course where she was told to take more time for herself! With a busy executive career, Laura was desperately seeking a way to find balance in her life. After much searching, she curiously joined an essentials yoga program with one of Sydney’s oldest yoga schools, Life and Balance. Within weeks she was practicing daily with her mentor and strength trainer David Montgomery and after taking time off to travel and attend yoga classes around Europe, Laura completed her 250 hour teacher training under her teachers Noelle Connolly and Kat Clayton at Body Mind Life.

With a solid daily meditation and yoga practice, Laura brings her own journey to the classroom, helping students to find balance, reduce stress and manage their busy lives. Taking inspiration from both the hatha and vinyasa yoga styles, Laura tailors her classes to her students, creating an experience that calms and soothes the nervous system, whilst bringing strength to the body and clarity to the mind. Her classes will make you feel supported, with a focus on nurturing and caring for our body, mind and spirit, regardless of how new or advanced your practice may be. Come prepared to open up, increase flexibility, and learn a little something about yourself along the way.

Bevan has been athletic since he was a kid, drawn to many sports and playing rugby league at state level. Along with his athletic side he always had a burning passion to be creative. It was in 2008 when deciding to do an acting course in which he discovered yoga.

His curiosity was piqued, for the first time he felt a connection that linked his mind body and soul together that he never felt before.  This led him down a path of hatha, bikram, iyengar before settling into a daily meditation and vinyasa practice.

After graduating from the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts with a degree in acting, Bevan was ready to deepen his understanding of yoga both spiritually and practically, and decided to complete his teacher training with Body Mind Life under the guidance of his teachers Noelle Connolly, Kat Clayton and with Shiva Rea in India.

With an understanding of contemporary movement styles blended with his knowledge of anatomy and a deep understanding of yoga asana Bevan is passionate about creating an experience which will leave you feeling completely present in a world where we are constantly distracted.

Alice

Ali balances her love of yoga with a career in events and communications, and a reflection of these two (opposing) worlds coexisting, Ali reflects this in her teaching styles of vinyasa yoga and yin yoga.

The freedom you're invited to experience in the classroom is a reflection of her own experiences. Ali teaches from a passionate place cultivated from years as a practitioner, self-directed study and self inquiry. Her intention is to not only support you physically in building a stronger and more supple body, a bi-product of the asana practice, but also to support your journey to your metta physical realms; your mental and spiritual depths.

Ali's love of the natural world gives her the energy and capacity to give deliver what's she loves most. Forever searching for a beach to swim, a colourful sunrise or sunset, laying in the sun or cooking for loved ones!

"What yoga has taught me is how to be free from animosity, ill will and impatience. To continually grow and evolve, to change in a direction that will allow me to be a grateful friend, an effective communicator, an open teacher, an attentive sister, an appreciative daughter, a loving partner and be a beacon of light to all those around me.”

‘Yoga teaches you more about your ‘self’ than you know exists. Resist and you'll stuggle, release and you'll be free. Trust is your greatest teacher!'

Elisha

Elisha

Elisha

Elisha

Elisha was initially attracted to Power yoga for the physical challenge and sweat factor!! She loved the way it strengthened her body, whilst simultaneously improving her flexibility.

Coming from a professional dance background, Elisha could access a feeling of freedom and expression on her mat, that was similar to that when she was performing on stage.

It soon became apparent that not only on a physical level were things changing and getting stronger, but also on a spiritual level new insights were developing. “Yoga gave me that invitation to honestly look inside myself, to discover my patterns of self doubt. It has given me a beautiful new awareness and the ability to just be. Yoga has taught me to ‘let it be messy’, rather than focusing on achieving perfection.

The feeling of unlimitlessness I experience on my mat is what feeds and inspires me…” Through a powerful Vinyasa yoga flow and a hint of dance, Elisha is inspired to share the yoga love! Her sequencing is playful. Her classes will rinse you, twist you and stretch you to find your edge not only physically but holistically. She offers herself completely to every class and truly challenges her students to hold their own space.

Fraser

Fraser

A beach boy at heart, Fraser first found yoga via surfing. ‘I needed something to do when there were no waves!’ he says.

Pastime quickly became passion when Fraser noticed how yoga had rapidly increased his strength and balance. ‘I was hooked, but it was when I noticed the balance it brought to my whole life that I fell in love with yoga and wanted to share it with others.’

This passion led him to power yoga teacher training. Fraser brings an infectious enthusiasm (delivered in a thick Scottish accent!) to all his classes. ‘We never stop learning with yoga. It’s when we’re on the mat that we can truly find out what we’re made of.’ .
